As per the report by Forrester’s Retail Wave, smart phones contribution to retail purchase is $1 trillion in the US in 2018. Therefore it is indispensable to create experiences that will make your mobile experience better.

Mobile forms are significant for phone conversions. Whether it is for an eCommerce checkout or a form for signup. You will not like if your audience leaves your website owing to bad user experience.

Let's see what effective mobile design forms you can make use of to derive more mobile conversions.

  1. Understanding the difference between mobile and desktop UI

When you have to design mobile forms, you must know the difference between a mobile UI and a desktop UI.

Aspect Ratio

Most smartphones use portrait orientation, therefore, enabling vertical scrolling as practice or choice.

Moreover, phone size is smaller than desktop, so during one single scroll, you may not see the entire form.

Navigation

With a small screen, navigating with a mouse won't sound possible. What you need to make options for navigation that will suit your purpose. You must also remember that your solution must not hide any important information.

Font Size

16px is considered standard body font for mobile devices. Fonts smaller than or bigger may cause visual discomforts.

An MIT research made this suggestion:

  • Not to use font size below 10px.
  • Always have a standard width for lettering.

Remember that your design must suit your users

Well, your design is not for yourself, but your audience.

Users may not like what you would prefer. So, you must have a thorough idea about the mobile size and know what they want.

  1. Single Column Form

A Baymard Institute research points out that cart and checkout activities with multi-column layouts appear vulnerable. This may make users fill information less important and skip the significant ones.

Single column forms prevent users from getting distracted, therefore increasing conversions.

Multi-step Forms

When you have numerous questions, then you must opt for multi-step forms. And make sure there is a process head to let the users know about the progress as they fill the form.

Lesser the fields, it is better

The shorter the form, it is good.

People don't like forms that ask too many questions, hence they abandon them. Also, longer the form, more complicated it may be. Make sure you have simplified fields and shorter forms.

Add automation

Everyone loves automation. Know here about some tricks to get automation applied to your form.

Autofill and Autocomplete

With this users can fill the form fast and easily.  Just entering a known locality, the postal code gets updated automatically.

Autocorrect

With this users can correct any information filled mistakenly. E.g. if the name of a city or locality is entered wrongly, autocorrect helps to proofread.

Autodetection

One of the best trick for automation that will make the user experience better. E.g. Location detection can recognize a user's location through geolocation API. Just you must ensure that the location will be kept private.

  1. Dropdowns are not feasible

Avoid dropdowns for the small screen as they can take more device space. Instead, you can sue other options to have more interaction with users.

Sliders

Use sliders when there are large ranges to choose from. Users can use a slider to choose the range.

Steppers

When users have to choose an option, steppers can help to decide the range. For instance, in booking apps for hotels or flights, this feature helps to book a room or flight for a limited count of people.

Segments

These are needed when there are limited and mutual choices.

  1. Field labels and masks

These help to lower errors and reduce efforts.  By showing the right formats, like display of credit card for the number, you can lower errors and make filling up form easier.

Field masks are suggested to be visible as fast as the user starts filling up a form.  It won't be effective if you make it available gradually, when the user is yet wondering how to insert the input.

Do not use placeholder text. They appear pre-filled and users may skip this part of the form.

Field labels

They are essential for describing the reason for input controls. There are various field levels. Designers must first think about deciding the place of labels before considering about the controls.

Floating labels must be made with use JavaScript or CSS.
